Zesco United and Nkana FC drawn in same CAF Confed Group C
In a bizzare turn out of events, the Total CAF Confederation Cup Draws that took place on Monday may not have the outcome any Zambian would have anticipated as Zesco United and Nkana FC have both been drawn in group C along with Ghana’s Asante Kotoko and the experienced Al Hilal from Sudan.
The two teams have had an identical season so far with both teams having been demoted from the Total CAF Campions league after being knocked out in the preliminary stage of the competition. This is the first time that two Zambian Teams have made it to the group stages of the continental tournaments at the same time not to speak of being drawn in the same group.
Only two teams can progress from each group into the knock-out stage quarter finals and both the Zambian Champions and the Barclays Cup winners will be looking to attain such feat. There is a chance for both teams to progress to the quarter finals if the manage to be the top two teams in that group.
Zesco United and Nkana will open the Zambian Football Season in the new model ‘Zoom’ Ndlovu Charity Shield match which features the Zambian champions and the winners of the Barclays Cup next weekend. This will be their first meeting this season and despite the teams being in different pools of the transition MTN Super League, they will still have to face off on continental turf. Both ‘Kalampa’ and the ‘team ya ziko’ have been tipped of to win their respective Super league pools and if they do, they would set up an MTN Super League final at the end of the season.
This might turn out to be a duel that Zambians will remember for years to come. Brace yourselves….
We hope the top two teams that progress from group C are the Zambian teams….
All the best to Nkana FC and Zesco United
