Zambian Premier League Launched
The Zambia Football Association (FAZ) has completed the process of separating the Zambian Premier League (ZPL) from the Association.
FAZ’s president, Andrew Kamanga, says the process has been steady and will continue until it reaches its ideal state.
With this new arrangement, the ZPL will have the authority to operate independently, while FAZ will concentrate on national teams and development leagues.
Thabo Ngobeni of SuperSport Africa says they are in talks with Zambian clubs about the separation of the league to help them discover the opportunities that this significant step offers.
During a meeting with SuperSport Africa, FAZ, and the 18 Super League teams at Golden Peacock Hotel, they discussed the implications of the separation.
Kamanga said, “This is not a separation but a partnership that promises to take our game to a higher level.”
He added that there’s no reason for the separation to fail as it has been tried before in the history of Zambian football.
Kamanga also said that FAZ will retain its supervisory role over football in Zambia, with ZPL given appropriate management rights as it operates independently. Under this new arrangement, FAZ will focus on developmental programs through all national teams, women’s football, and grassroots.
Thando Bakumeni, SuperSport Senior Commercial Manager, said SuperSport Africa values its partnership with the Zambian market and is looking forward to more partnerships.
Kephas Katongo, ZPL board chairperson, said the separation of the league was a significant moment. He added that their goal is to generate passive income for clubs through innovative ideas and capacity building. They also plan to increase fan engagement, especially among millennials.
The ZPL secretariat will be headed by CEO Mr Joseph Chimpampwe and League Manager Mr Brian Mulenga who’ll help usher in this new era in Zambian League football.
