Zesco United have secured an important away victory in in West Africa when they beat Niger side AS Sonidep 2 – 1 in a preliminary round first leg match match played in Niamey.
New signing Rahim Osumanu and Lazarous Kambole scored late goals to secure the important victory for the George Lwandamina coached side.
Lwandamina named a familiar starting XI with the only new face being newly signed Mwila Phiri starting at left back.
The match was tied goalless at half time and Zesco were holding up well. A counter attack from deep in the Zesco half saw Enock Sabamukuma lead an attack to the left with the resultant cross falling kindly for substitute Osumanu who tapped in easily in the 75th minute.
Sonidep remained patient in their build up and continued to probe. Their persistence paid off when a shot from the edge of the box slipped the hands of goalkeeper Jacob Banda for the on rushing striker Koffi Dognon to score in an open goal in the 78th minute.
Kambole ensured maximum points for the Ndola based side when scored in the 86th minute.
The two teams clash in the second leg onTuesday 4th December, 2018.
